- W2483420003 abstract "This chapter reviews the development and presents a detailed analysis of an aggregative model of a typical computing system. The model considered is sufficiently complicated and has all the basic features of real systems to be present. Subsequently, a set of hardware- and software-dependent parameters is defined as the model of a classical multiprogramming time-sharing system with a virtual paging memory. Page traffic between primary and secondary memory is studied as the internal traffic of a resource aggregate. The analysis of the proposed model focuses on the respective influence on processor usage of the user program-paging activity, the degree of multiprogramming, and the length of a so-called execution interval. The evaluation of the system response time should reveal that these concepts of stability and saturation relate the phenomenon known as thrashing to parameters defining the work load in addition to those defining the page traffic between primary and secondary memory. The rates of transition between running, suspended, and ready states for most systems that correspond to the aforementioned model, normatively would be much higher than the rates at which programs are created and completed, that is, than the rates at which programs leave and return to the idle state. An essential property of near-complete decomposability is that the relative values of the short-term equilibrium attained in an aggregate are approximately maintained in the long run; these optimal values are also those which maximize in the long run the fraction of time the processor is busy, with full or incomplete load. A policy that optimizes processor efficiency by taking advantage of the locality property should provide the user program with the longest possible execution intervals." @default.
