- W2483580633 abstract "In works of fantasy the Doppelganger, or split personality, is a fairly common figure, such as appears in Poe’s William Wilson or Stevenson’s Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. In his first real exploration of this theme, in The Haunted Man and the Ghost’s Bargain, Dickens uses the second self merely as teacher, like the ghosts in A Christmas Carol and the Goblin of the Bell, whose instructions bring about the existence of a happier (and therefore presumably a more unified) self. Yet the true mythic light glares over the meeting of Redlaw and the Phantom: ‘As the gloom and shadow thickened behind him, in that place where it had been gathering so darkly, it took, by slow degrees…an awful likeness of himself! Ghastly and cold, colourless in its leaden face and hands, but with his features, and his bright eyes, and his grizzled hair, and dressed in the gloomy shadow of his dress, it came into its terrible appearance of existence, motionless, without a sound.' It is like an 'animated image of himself dead’, and its eyes are ‘a fixed, unalterable, steady horror’, while Redlaw is a man who ‘has made too much of all that was and might have been, and too little of what is’. The ‘incessant whisper’ always in his ears is, ‘If I could forget my sorrow and my wrong, I would.’ His phantom self gives him this power, and the power to pass on the gift to others; but forgetting the past diminishes the self to the level of the ‘baby savage’ who has never known love." @default.
