- W2483609277 abstract "Two weeks to the day after Barack Obama was elected President, on a flight to Hawai’i to see the Kennedy Theatre production of Macbeth at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, I came across this sentence in David Remnick’s New Yorker article, “The Joshua Generation.” Remnick, quoting Randall Kennedy, a professor at Obama’s alma mater, the Harvard Law School, writes, “‘He’s operating outside the precincts of black America,’ Kennedy said. ‘He is growing up in Hawai’i, for God’s sake’” (72). The phrasing suggests the manifest absurdity of an African American from Hawai’i being informed in, or shaped by, the racial discourse of the “mainland,” or, as it is now commonly referred to by residents of Hawai’i, the “continent.” And it is certainly true that Obama’s background—white mother from Kansas, black father from Kenya, a childhood lived in Indonesia and Hawai’i, a grandfather who was a medicine man—differs radically from the stereotype of the experience of those on the continent. What Kennedy’s comment implies, however, is the irrelevance, more or less, of the racial politics of Hawai’i—but the Macbeth production reflected racial divisions and linkages that are not to be dismissed.
