- W2483731092 abstract "Of all Faulkner’s works, The Hamlet (1940) is the most impressively written and organised, drawing from its author the fruits of a profound and protean engagement with his material. Faulkner was ever one for the multivalent expression of truth, needing access to his subject matter from several related but discrete vantage points with room enough to explore each fully so that from their interaction could emerge an embracing but unrestrictive unity. This strategy was well suited to his material but it was no less necessary to his temperament, since it must be remembered that he came to literature with a surfeit of feeling which depended on everything most dear to those who brood over a narrow, well-defined way of life. The instress of a familiar turn of phrase or gesture, the aura which attaches to names and events, the reflexes which may be started up by the most mundane object—all formed an amalgam of sensation and thought which permeated his sensibility. The creation of Yoknapatawpha was thus exactly the response needed to define his native fidelity, to order and deepen his emotions by relating time and locality to the myth which so exercised his imagination. We are reminded of one of Ezra Pound’s sayings about poetry (he could have been referring to creative work generally): … poetry is not greatly concerned with what a man thinks; but with what is so imbedded in his nature that it never occurs to him to question it; it is not a matter of which idea he holds but of the depth at which he holds it.1" @default.
