- W2483795797 abstract "Acoustic scattering can be sorted into categories according to the size and shape of an object relative to the insonifying wavelength. Specular scatterers, those much larger than a wavelength, obey geometric laws. Unresolved scatterers well below a wavelength in size are diffusive and still exert a major influence on images by causing speckle, a fine-grained background texture in images. Scatterers lying in size and shape between these two extremes fall into the diffractive range. These scatterers change their acoustic scattering appearance dependent on their shape, size, material properties, and orientation relative to and characteristics and frequency content of an incident acoustic beam. The role of scattering is explained in the overall imaging process. Scattering from simply shaped objects is examined analytically and by the Born approximation. The effects of speckle on imaging are quantified by contrast ratio and statistical distributions. The back-scattered field from random media is described by an acoustic version of the van Cittert–Zernike theorem. Methods for speckle reduction in imaging are discussed. Speckle tracking is an important method of measuring tissue displacements and movement." @default.
