- W2483933155 abstract "Those critics who have treated Shakespeare’s plays as if they were poems have in recent years been themselves the object of adverse criticism. Some of this has been touched on earlier in this study. When F. R. Leavis considers it ‘necessary to insist’ that Othello ‘is poetic drama’ and not a psychological novel, no one can demur, but a certain doubt may creep in when he equates ‘poetic drama’ directly with ‘a dramatic poem’. These forms are not synonymous. From the Lindisfarne ‘Harrowing of Hell’ of the eighth century to Browning’s dramatic monologues and beyond, the dramatic poem has been a distinct genre. Drama, poetic or not, as its root meaning implies, is unlike a dramatic poem in demanding enactment, physical embodiment. This uneasy relationship of the poetic and dramatic informs Leavis’s argument elsewhere. Thus, when relating Bradley’s ‘obtuseness to the tragic significance’ of Othello, and his ‘insensibility’ to Shakespeare’s poetry, Leavis insidiously slips in parenthetically a rather doubtful assertion: ‘it is still not superfluous to insist that the poetic skill is one with the dramatic’ (C, p. 137)." @default.
