- W2483976012 abstract "The second half of the 1970s would not witness the same challenges to the US-UK relationship as experienced in the decade before and the period would largely see continuity and cordial relations at an official level. However, these years were a time of considerable flux for both countries in the domestic and international arenas. Britain’s precarious economic position would dominate American perceptions and impact upon the defence commitments at the heart of their relationship. Inflation, low growth, unemployment and a weak currency bedevilled the Labour government as it tried to carry through tax increases and public expenditure cuts.1 President Gerald Ford’s assumption of power following Richard Nixon’s resignation in August 1974 restored a degree of political stability in the US, but the new President faced a number of international challenges, particularly the fall of South Vietnam, unravelling of detente and the fallout from his controversial pardon of Nixon. And whilst not as severe as British problems, the US economy was also experiencing significant inflationary pressures and rising interest rates. The impact of the 1973 oil price rises would continue to have significant implications for all Western nations’ economic and energy policies." @default.
