The lasers are excited by the following processes: (1) resonant excitation-energy transfer; (2) electron-impact excitation; (3) line absorption; and (4) radiative cascade. The first reports of actual laser oscillation in molecular species were of oscillation on vibrational transitions between excited electronic energy levels. There are at least four important high-power molecular lasers in which one of the main selective excitation processes of the upper laser levels is molecule–molecule vibrational–rotational excitation transfer. They are the nitrogen–carbon dioxide, carbon dioxide–xenon–helium, pure carbon dioxide, and the nitrogen-nitrous oxide lasers. Molecule–molecule, vibrational resonant excitation transfer was first used as a means of selective excitation in a laser system by Patel. The CO 2 molecule is a linear symmetric triatomic molecule, the outer atoms being the two oxygen atoms, and it has three normal modes of vibration. Each of these modes is quantized and can exist as a harmonic oscillator usually independent of the others." @default.
