- W2484166601 abstract "Public perception of risk in biotechnology is influenced largely by the effectiveness of regulation, the prevailing ethical climate, and broader economic and social considerations. The ethics surrounding the application of modern biotechnology also constitute an important influence on public perception. The reason for this is that biotechnology, through its power to change the course of evolution or to speed it up, is often perceived as a challenge to basic ethical values and the notion of “naturalness.” Equally, biosafety and trade regulation are shaped by public perception. This chapter discusses these inputs and especially factors involved in shaping public opinion. For this discussion, the public is defined as the end user of the GM (genetic modification) technology or the consumer of its products. The uptake of any technology is dependent on public attitudes towards it. As GM technology is relatively new; consumers need to be informed about the pros and cons of it; consumer attitudes are affected by their ability to identify GM products. Therefore the labeling of these products is potentially important and different approaches to labeling are described in the chapter." @default.
