- W2484338356 abstract "Drawing on material collected in interviews with people in poverty in seven countries (Britain, China, India, Norway, Pakistan, South Korea, and Uganda), this chapter examines responses to shame engendered by poverty. Most people in poverty endeavour to maximize income and minimize expenditure to ensure survival and obviate shame. Frustrated by a structural lack of opportunities however, they often pretend that things are fine and seek to keep up appearances. Given limited resources, the pretence is hard to sustain and resultant pressure can lead to anxiety, depression, and suicide attempts. Withdrawing socially conserves money and avoids exposure to shame but reduces support that is often needed. Anger is sometimes apparent, most frequently expressed as generalized contempt for government and the media, but collective action is rare, dissipated by tasks of survival and ‘othering’, the criticizing of others in poverty believing them to fit the negative stereotypes propagated by affluent opinion leaders." @default.
