- W2484397316 abstract "By the time Woolf published Mrs Dalloway in 1925, the English novel appeared to have come to a simultaneous fruition and dissolution that paralleled that of the liberal society on which it was based. Throughout the nineteenth century the novel had been one of the chief ways through which European society both explored the meaning, and affirmed the value, of what Lionel Trilling describes as liberalism’s chief tenet, ‘the value of individual existence in all its variousness, complexity, and difficulty’.1 With the new century the novel itself became an embodiment of that ideal. The late style of Henry James, so demanding to read that one is flattered by his sense of one’s adequacy to it, provided an expression of a more far-ranging liberalism, of a greater generosity of spirit, than any society could hope to reach in practice. And with that style what Lawrence called ‘the one bright book of life’2 achieved a peculiar democratization of spirit. I say peculiar because it had nothing to do with the novel’s accessibility to the common reader, but depended instead upon the novelist’s declaration of his or her own independence, the right to choose whatever subject matter or prose style he or she wanted, even the right to make the novel readable only by the fit and the few." @default.
