- W2484421192 abstract "An important factor in medical nutritional therapy for elderly patients with diabetes is optimization of energy intake and macronutrient composition, considering the food source and nutrient quality. In addition, malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies should be carefully considered. Asian countries, including Japan, traditionally have a high carbohydrate intake. However, this high carbohydrate intake has adverse effects on lipid and glucose metabolism. Therefore, the optimal carbohydrate energy ratio (% of total nutritional energy intake) for the Japanese elderly with type 2 diabetes is less than 65%. A dietary pattern that includes a high intake of vegetables, legumes, seaweed, and fish and a low intake of refined grains, sweets, sugar-sweetened beverages, and alcohol is favorable for diabetic patients. Furthermore, the type and degree of physical activity, cognitive function, lifestyle, social factors, medication, and hospitalization vary among the elderly. Therefore, individualized medical nutritional therapy that considers all these factors is essential." @default.
