- W2484591432 abstract "This chapter discusses the interactions between different limiting factors in birds. The changes in the densities of many populations seem to be influenced by the variations in one major limiting factor, as indicated by both observational and experimental evidence, but it is equally clear that different limiting factors can sometimes act together to influence numbers and that their effects are not always straightforwardly additive. Sometimes, one factor might enhance the effect of another, so that their combined impact on population levels is greater than the sum of their individual effects. At other times, one factor might reduce the effect of another, so that their combined impact is less than the sum of their separate effects. For breeding, birds require both food and nest sites, and the nesting densities of many species are limited by one or the other factor, whichever is in the shortest supply. For some species, certain regions may offer abundant food but fewer nest sites, while other regions may offer plenty of nest sites but little food." @default.
