- W248474927 abstract "There are not many issues which concern the novel of the Hebrew enlight enment (or 'Haskalah' novel 1850-1880 in Eastern Europe) which are as beyond debate as the claim for the influence of Charles Dickens' social didactic novel on the Hebrew novel of the 'Haskalah' period. Although Abraham Mapu, the creator of the first Hebrew novel, apparently was not acquainted with Dickens' works (as he was with French romantic narration, especially those by Alexandre Dumas, Eugene Sue, Victor Hugo and Paul Pavel2), his successors, especially P. Smolenskin and R.A. Braudes, used many of Dickens' novels as models for their own work. The influence of the Dickensian novel?especially its social didacticism? on the Hebrew novel of the enlightenment period is recognized by those critics who deal with this period in Hebrew fiction, such as Lachover, Klaus ner, Shaked, Sha'nan and Patterson,3 who have made thorough studies of the evolution of the 'Haskalah' Hebrew novel. Sha'nan notes the influ ence of Dickens on the novels of Peretz Smolenskin, undoubtedly the most prominent novelist of the realistic period4 of the Haskalah literature:" @default.
