- W2484765746 abstract "But I wonder, is a contextualist defense of vegetarianism actually a defense of vegetarianism at all? As I specified in Chapter 3, we must take the landbase as primary. We should listen to it when it tells us which uses, of it and the many kinds of people who inhabit it, are acceptable and which are not. This is our top priority, and it is perhaps the basic precept of ecological sustainability. If abstaining from eating animals is amenable to the needs and interests of our landbase, then we have reason to embrace it. We can articulate this ecologically based decision in moral terms if we wish (Keller and Golley 2000). But we can just as easily regard it pragmatically, for calling it right amounts to little more than praising a way of eating that works within a given context. And if it does not work, then we must not engage in it—whether or not we call it wrong. This indicates that nothing about vegetarianism per se is morally relevant.
