- W2485129099 abstract "In a recent essay on the vitality and variety of contemporary black British poetry, Lauri Ramey attempts to focus her discussion with recourse to the debate about the cultural visibility and impact of black British writing on British writing as a whole. It is a debate shaped by crucial recurring questions: ‘Is there a canon of black British writing? What relationship does this brand of writing bear to British literature as it has been commonly studied? What might the special features be that identify black British writing?’1 Canons, nations, characteristics — the terms are familiar and overlapping. They suggest the vocabulary through which black British writing has been frequently evaluated; yet, paradoxically, such writing has simultaneously prompted a crisis of exactly these evaluatory terms, revealing them as unwieldy and often problematic concepts in a black British literary context, raising uncomfortable questions about the process of evaluation. How can, and why should, a provocatively counter-canonical body of writing become organized into a new catalogue of achievement that threatens to blunt the disruptive and radical consequences of black writing for British literature? Is a national paradigm the best way of declaring the cultural specifics of literary texts? Is black writing constituted by a series of shared literary techniques or concerns which might parallel the allegedly racial or cultural connections between black people (presuming, of course, we can agree on who is black)?" @default.
