- W248522196 abstract "Previous writers have revealed that problem decomposition is central to the study of hierarchical control systems, but no one has demonstrated that an hierarchical structure can be obtained by rigorous decomposition. Many writers have shown how decentralised structure can be obtained, but no one has shown how to obtain a problem structure in which some subproblems have priority over others. The reason is quite simple. To obtain an hierarchy it is necessary to introduce assumptions when decomposing the overall control problem, and such a manipulation is foreign to the mathematical theory of decomposition. Hierarchical control systems have therefore been designed by heuristic methods where the subproblems are synthesised rather than derived from the overall problem. A failing of this approach is that one is not forced to recognize the assumptions implied in the resulting hierarchy. An alternative method is thus proposed. This consists of mathematically formulating the overall problem and then decomposing it into subproblems using a few basic manipulations. One such manipulation, called problem evolution, involves the introduction of simplifications. Each of the problem manipulations will be described and it will then be illustrated how they can be combined to design an hierarchical structure." @default.
