- W2485325980 abstract "Metrological laboratories — that is, laboratories devoted principally to establishing physical standards and making physical measurements — are a modern phenomenon. Although their emergence was in some cases due largely to the efforts of specific individuals, towards the end of the nineteenth century at least two sets of historical conditions had evolved to make such laboratories increasingly welcome, if not necessary. First, starting in the 1830s, physicists, especially German physicists, began seeking increasingly precise observational and experimental data that both revealed new physical phenomena and tested the explanatory power of physical theory. As a result, the new field of precision or measuring physics began to emerge. Second, and closely tied to this first point, after 1870 the field of precision physics experienced increased demands from both the physics community and industry (in particular, the old mechanical and the young electrical and optical industries). Both academic physicists and industrial interests wanted precision physics to conduct precision-measuring research aimed at establishing universally trustworthy physical standards, at creating or improving scientific instruments and apparatus, and at testing instruments, apparatus and materials.KeywordsNational Physical LaboratoryTechnical SectionScientific SectionGerman PhysicistGerman IndustryThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
