- W2485525478 abstract "This chapter focuses on growth hormone (GH) deficiency, its substitution and their effects on sleep and psychopathology. Secretion of growth hormone is closely associated to slow wave sleep. The chapter discusses that all parts of the somatotropic system interact with sleep. It shows that growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) and GH secretagogues have sleep-promoting effects, whereas somatostatin may suppress sleep. Several studies have attempted to determine the possible effects of GH on the brain, including cognition, quality of life, and well-being. Changes of somatotropic secretion have been found in mood disorders. Changes of GH secretion and IGF-I levels are found in depression. However, GH deficiency causes typical complaints of decreased well-being, low mood, and lack of vitality. These symptoms have been shown to be improved by GH substitution. In depressed patients, a blunted GH response after stimulation of the somatotropic axis and a disturbed pattern of GH secretion has been found." @default.
