- W2485592523 abstract "For many readers who pick up The Yorker the cartoons are the most important and consistently appealing part of the magazine. The high quality and historical popularity of the periodical's cartoons are not merely accidental; it is the result of the development of a tradition growing out of superb craftsmanship and the perfection of a graphic genre over an extended period. For the seventy-five years since the inaugural issue of February 21, 1925, a combination of editorial guidance and artistic talent has resulted in an almost indefinable yet readily identifiable coalescing of themes and that make the product generally recognizable. In a sense there is just as recognizable a New Yorker style in the cartoons as there is in the journal's casuals (the term that founding editor Harold W. Ross applied to the publication's short prose pieces). While the magazine's list of contributors of humorous prose is legendary (and includes James Thurber, E. B. White, S. J. Perelman, Robert Benchley, Peter DeVries, and Woody Allen), a similar register of the cartoonists whose work has appeared in pages of The Yorker also reads like a who's who. In the early years this included Peter Arno (Curtis Arnoux Peters), who coined the phrase Well, back to the old drawing board as the caption for his 1941 drawing of a seemingly unconcerned man in a suit and hat carrying a roll of blueprints under his arm and strolling away from the scene of the crash of a fighter plane while in the background military men and an ambulance rush toward the crumpled aircraft and the pilot is seen descending by parachute. Other noteworthy cartoonists have been Charles Addams, Whitney Darrow, Jr., Chon Day, Robert Day, Alan Dunn, John Held, Jr., Syd Hoff, Helen Hokinson (who specialized in society matrons and flappers), Arnie Levin, George Price, Gardner Rea, Ronald Searle, William Steig, Saul Steinberg, Richard Taylor, and Thurber. The talent and longevity of some of these artists is amazing: Addams's first Yorker cartoon was published in 1935, for example, and he was a regular" @default.
