- W2485969115 abstract "This chapter discusses the pathology and management of the diseases of the vitreous. The vitreous differs from any other structure of the human body in that it contains no blood-vessels, no nerves, no lymphatics, and very few cells of any kind. As the vitreous is completely avascular, it is incapable of inflammation and is unaffected by trauma. IAny changes that may occur in the vitreous are a result of changes in its surrounding structures, the vitreous itself being entirely inert. The diseases of vitreous include opacities, fluid vitreous, pseudoglioma, and pus in the vitreous. Conditions such as iridocyclitis, choroiditis, and myopia all produce vitreous opacities. Any eye that has had any sort of disease of any part of the uveal tract or retina has vitreous opacities to a greater or lesser degree. Fluid vitreous can occur as a result of cyclitis or any other disease that adversely affects its nutrition. It is accompanied by the presence of gross opacities or synchesis scintillans. Certain pathological conditions in the vitreous may give a white or grey pupillary reflex, and when these conditions occur in young children, great care must be taken to exclude glioma of the retina." @default.
