There are a variety of forces upon people now to continue to participate in the workforce, some of them of their own creation, some of them due to economic or social pressures. Despite increasing cross-migration of younger workers from poorer communities into ageing developed populations, there is now an urgency for governments to raise the age of retirement or eschew the concept entirely. This is because the sums needed to pay out 20 to 30 years of retirement pensions to the generation now approaching traditional retirement age are simply not there.
