Academic teachers are facing the challenge of how to adapt their teaching to suit the needs of these students. The paper looks for a way to teach an introductory linguistics course to students of English whose academic skills are insufficient for tertiary study, but the discussion is relevant to teaching all introductory academic courses. It addresses the issue of how to integrate content instruction with explicit teaching of academic literacy skills indispensible for college success so that low-achieving students who have been traditionally excluded from tertiary education can be successfully included in academic classes." @default.
