- W2486505064 abstract "Chapter SummaryThe emphasis of business continuity managers in the past was to produce “the plan.” Achieving the goal of developing a broader business continuity management program in too many instances became secondary if the need for a program was recognized at all. The standards correctly place the focus on developing a business continuity management system, but the business continuity plan still holds its place as the most critical document in the effort to continue the critical operations of the organization and to recover from the effects of a damaging incident. Based in part on the all-hazard, Multihazard Functional Planning structure recommended by the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency, a “basic plan” describes the pertinent parts of the business continuity management system that the responsible individuals must know to achieve the objectives of resiliency. The basic plan is supplemented by specific team plans in which the instructions and resources needed to implement the organization’s continuity and recovery strategy are listed. A management team or a crisis management team oversees the entire incident response effort. They are typically located in the emergency operations center. Important information about how and when to activate the plan (“invocation of the plan”), the order of succession if a key member of the organization is unable to perform their duties under the plan, and a description of the execution of its high-level data and relocation strategies are found in the basic plan. It describes how this information is communicated internally and externally, how damage is assessed, and how financial or purchasing policy may change during an incident. The business continuity plan should be brief and to the point, but it should encompass enough information to implement the strategic objectives and resource requirements of the organization and of the individual continuity or recovery teams at a time when stress and physical and mental exhaustion are elevated. Plans are maintained in a manner in which they can be accessed offsite, are flexible, and their security and the confidentiality of their contents respected." @default.
