- W2486571831 abstract "Cigarette smoking is by far the most common cause of emphysema. The pathophysiology of this disease has remained unclear and no effective therapeutic strategies have been developed for its prevention. In a cigarette smoke-exposed guinea pig model developed in our laboratory, we have observed that there is a close link between oxidative damage, apoptosis and emphysematous lung damage. Apparently, the initial event in the pathophysiological condition is the oxidative damage of proteins. This is followed by inflammation, proteolysis and apoptosis leading to destruction of alveolar membranes and septal cells, resulting in increased air space in the lung. When the cigarette smoke-exposed guinea pigs are given black tea infusion to drink, oxidative damage is prevented and this is accompanied by the prevention of apoptosis and lung damage. The results obtained with guinea pigs, if extrapolated to humans, would suggest that regular intake of black tea may protect the smokers from cigarette smoke-induced emphysematous lung damage." @default.
