It also gave scientific lectures on the history of music, aesthetics, and exercises in combination (ensemble) playing and chorus singing. As early as November 1842, Mendelssohn had written to Ignaz Moscheles about joining the Conservatorium as one of its teachers. However, not everyone, even in Leipzig, was convinced about the value of the new institution. One of the critics was Herrmann Hirschbach, the editor of the Musikalisch-Kritisches Repertorium. A satirical article about Leipzig music, published in the same journal in 1845, gave an even more negative opinion of the Conservatorium after Mendelssohn resumed his activities there." @default.
