- W2486981819 abstract "Few societies have changed so rapidly and so radically as has the Republic of Ireland since 1960. The resulting transformation is particularly striking given Ireland’s image as a rural, conservative and Catholic backwater of post-war Europe. Moreover, there was substance to the image. The first 40 years of independence — from the 1920s to the 1960s — were notable for institutional continuity rather than change, and for an isolation which, by 1950, had become acute. As the rest of Europe basked in a sustained period of economic growth and implemented basic Welfare State principles, Ireland slumbered, unable or unwilling to cope with its considerable economic and social problems. In the late fifties, however, crisis led to innovation in the form of State initiatives to promote industrialisation. Success in those initiatives brought a more general promise that the fruits of independence would finally be realised, vindicating the long nationalist struggle. The associated expectations and excitement were captured in the catch phrase of the 1960s, ‘the rising tide that would lift all boats’ by setting a new universal standard and ignoring old restrictions." @default.
