- W2486982893 abstract "Germinated barley foodstuff (GBF) is made of waste by-products of grains used in beer manufacturing, which contain hemicellulose-rich dietary fiber with a high water-holding capacity. In several gastrointestinal dysfunctional models, GBF prevented diarrhea and constipation due to its high water-holding capacity. Interestingly, GBF had potent anti-inflammatory effects in ulcerative colitis (UC) patients. It is well established that inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn’s disease and UC, is apparently caused by an overwhelming immune response to luminal commensal bacteria in the mucosal tissue. Research has shown that the interaction between commensal bacteria and the mucosal immune system plays an important role in maintaining health and preventing the development of this disease. The GBF-induced anti-inflammatory effect may be related to the increase in short-chain fatty acids, especially butyrate – a production induced by improvement of microbiota. In Japan, GBF has been approved by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare as a medical food and clinically adopted in adjunctive nutraceutical therapy for UC. This review compiles our previous experimental studies and describes the future prospects for GBF utilization in another chronic medical threat: colon cancer." @default.
