- W2487192819 abstract "Fantasy football users were surveyed to determine both their motivations for playing the game as well as the perceived biological, psychological, and social effects that playing has on them. Previous research supports the notion that fantasy football users may be motivated by factors such as illusion of control (Thompson, Armstrong, & Thomas, 1998), monetary investment (Bernhard & Eade, 2005), mavenism and schwabism (Brown, Billings, & Ruihley, 2012), and the type of passion they feel towards the activity (Vallerand, 2008). Previous research suggests that these motivational factors may influence how frequently an individual participates in the activity (Kwak, Lim, Lee, & Mahan, 2010; Skitch & Hodgins, 2005), their physiological arousal and affect while playing (Ladoucer, Sevigny, Blasczynski, O'Connor, & Lavoie, 1998; Vallerand, Blanchard, Genevieve, Richard, Catherine, Maude, & Marsoleis, 2003) and the quality of interpersonal relationships that an individual has both in the context of fantasy football as well as in their personal life (Philippe, Vallerand, Houlfort, Lavigne, & Donohue, 2010). Pearson's correlations were used to test the hypotheses that (1) illusion of control (IOC), monetary investment (MI), and mavenism/schwabism would be related to the number of fantasy football leagues that a user participates in (FFP); (2) higher degrees of IOC and increased MI would be related to greater perceived physiological arousal (PA) prior to and during the Sunday NFL games; (3) obsessive passion (OP) would be related to greater levels of general negative affect while harmonious passion (HP) would be related to greater levels of general positive affect prior to and during the Sunday NFL games; and (4) HP would be related to positive quality of interpersonal relationships (QIRS). A hierarchical multiple regression, as suggested for use in meditational models by Baron & Kenny (1986), was conducted to test the hypothesis that (5) positive affect during the Sunday NFL games would mediate the relationship between HP and positive QIRS. A survey was conducted with participants (N=111) recruited from online fantasy football message boards. Results partially supported hypothesis 1 with a significant positive correlation between IOC and FFP as well as mavenism/schwabism and FFP. Hypothesis 2 was partially supported as IOC was significantly positively correlated with PA prior to and during the Sunday NFL games. Hypothesis 3 was supported as OP was significantly positively correlated with negative affect prior to and during the games and HP was significantly positively correlated with positive affect prior to and during the Sunday NFL games. Hypothesis 4 was supported as HP was significantly positively correlated with QIRS. Hypothesis 5 was not supported by the results. These results suggest that individuals have varying motivations for participating in fantasy football and that these motivational factors may influence their level of participation in the game, their perceived physiological arousal and affective experiences…" @default.
