- W2487267216 abstract "The Enlightenment in colonial Ibero-America began as an offshoot of the Enlightenment in Spain and Portugal. Sociologically, the Enlightenment primarily influenced the higher classes. But among the middling classes it also affected the parish clergy, which was “strengthened in its function as a provider of knowledge that went beyond the merely pastoral,” a characterization which is true for the clergy in general, particularly since the Jesuits became the decisive mediators of the Enlightenment. This, along with the Bourbon reforms, may explain the indigenous rebellions of the 1780s. Again the Spanish American colonial history has three principal elements: the city, the great estate, and the Indian village ( pueblo ). The city and the great estate were centers of Hispanization. Finally, by means of the Pombaline reforms in the second half of the eighteenth century, regalism was strengthened, so that the incorporation of the bishops into secular authoritiy became increasingly apparent.
