- W2487330147 abstract "This paper presents an analysis of the discourses of inclusion and exclusion by examining key words in the lexicon. Under inclusion, the paper will discuss the words admit, place in a class or category, contain, consider as part or member, embody, comprehend, comprise, noting in each case the variety of connotations, having in common the root idea of acceptance, often motivated by generosity but also of the kind of itemization through which the parts of a whole may be brought to our attention. Conversely, exclusion has to do with prevention, conveyed by such words as debar, disbar, eliminate, suspend, prohibit – words whose connotations are often elitist, serving to reinforce the distinctions of a privileged group, often associated with power, authority and force and closely related to varieties of apartheid. The presentation offers an analysis of the discourse of inclusion and exclusion through close attention to language, showing how both generous and ungenerous ideas and practices are encoded in these terms." @default.
