- W2487730504 abstract "The distribution of chemicals resulting from the interaction of flowing fluid with a source of volatile chemicals is commonly called a plume, which has a discontinuous patchy structure. The internal structure of odor plumes changes predictably with both distance downstream from the source and distance from centerline across the plume, and behavioral experiments indicate that odor-tracking animals alter their tracking behavior in response to these changes. In most organisms tested, odor-tracking behavior requires the intermittent olfactory stimulation generated by the patchy structure of the plume to generate upstream movement and successful location of the source. Neurons at all levels of the olfactory system are sensitive to intermittent stimulation, and some circuits appear to preserve the temporal activation patterns experienced in a plume and relay them to higher processing centers in the brain. Recent studies using simulation models and odor-guided robots are leading to tests of biological hypotheses that would be difficult or impossible to address with living organisms, and are also leading to the first man-made plume-tracking systems." @default.
