The sisters wore plain clothes, renounced music and other worldly activities, educated their father’s enslaved workers, and publicly expressed their abolitionist beliefs. Elizabeth and Anne Hart founded the first Sunday school in Antigua and used it to campaign against the immorality that they attributed to slavery. Elizabeth Hart Thwaites and her husband Charles opened additional Sunday schools across the island, along with a primary school.
