- W2488132563 abstract "The traditional attitude which had existed in Germany before 1945 had emphasised that women should be first and foremost wife and mother and this had exerted a considerable influence on women’s attitudes towards education, training, employment, politics and participation in the life of society. Many activities and opportunities were governed by the sex of the individual. Girls took certain subjects at school, suited to their role as mother and housewife, and boys other subjects which were to help equip them for their ‘active’ role in society. Girls did not undergo vocational training to any great extent, boys did, although not the majority of them. Girls worked, if at all, for a few years before marriage and then, if they could afford it, gave up employment to bring up their children. There were ‘female’ occupations with a strong concentration of women and, conversely, ‘male’ occupations. Since women in most cases had a lower level of education and training than men, they had lower wages and salaries and limited career prospects, among other disadvantages, at work. Through their schooling women had developed little interest in politics, trade unions or in what happened within society at large. They were grossly under-represented in politics although it was there that the power lay to improve the position of women considerably.KeywordsVocational TrainingShift WorkSocial InstitutionMass OrganisationFamily CommitmentThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
