- W2488143363 abstract "The future of humanity is coming … to a bookstore or box office near you! It will bring violence, gore, death, destruction, mayhem, maybe a little sex, in other words, business as usual. By this portrayal, I describe here the post-humans envisioned by contemporary bioethicists. Haven’t heard of these new creatures? They’re long-lived, disease resistant, “better, stronger and faster” even than the bionic folk of television re-runs past and threaten — by definition — to end human life as we know it. Big deal? It is to cultists of both stripes, for whom no creation of fevered sci-fi imaginations is too extreme to eschew moral comment. As a discipline, bioethics is overrun with clones and cyborgs and chimera run amok. Fearsome as those creatures may be, they prove no match for the enhanced humans-cum-soulless-automata, who, defenders of the cult of life would have us believe, threaten to catapult us into a post-human future. Whatever their talents, after all, they would prove merely of human rather than of divine manufacture. Equally manufactured would prove any future persons designed to our specifications, whom the cult of rights would regard as products of our despotism. These future non-persons would mark an impressive feat: so advanced as to render us obsolete, and yet so degraded as to signal the destruction of human life as we know it." @default.
