- W2488260031 abstract "The career of the Bishop of Pamiers spanned the ancien régime, the Revolution, the Emigration and the Restoration. Charles-Constance-César-Loup-Joseph-Matthieu d’Agoult was born in Grenoble in 1747; he died in Paris on 21 July 1824. As a young man, with the bishopric of Pamiers, he was just approaching the higher reaches of the ecclesiastical world when the Revolution overturned the entire edifice. His new dawn only came 25 years later, with the Bourbon Restoration. In between, he played a major role in Louis XVI’s secret counter-Revolutionary diplomacy up to the fall of the monarchy, and was one of the principal organisers of the flight to Varennes. After the restoration, his continuing links with Louis XVI’s and Marie Antoinette’s one surviving child, the Duchesse d’Angoulême, assured him an influential, if informal, status at the centre of the Ultra party. Throughout his life d’Agoult was also a prolific pamphleteer, specialising in constitutional issues, finance and political economy. He has been completely ignored by historians." @default.
