- W2488337612 abstract "In current debates about moral responsibility, it is common to distinguish between two fundamentally different varieties of incompatibilism: Leeway Incompatibilism and Source Incompatibilism. This paper argues that those forms of Leeway Incompatibilism having no appeal to ‘origination’ or ‘ultimacy’ are problematic; this suggests that incompatibilists should prefer a version of Source Incompatibilism. Two species of Source Incompatibilism are then differentiated: Narrow Source Incompatibilism holds that alternative possibilities are outside the scope of what is required for moral responsibility, and Wide Source Incompatibilism holds that while ultimacy is most fundamental to moral responsibility, an agent meeting the ultimacy condition will also have alternative possibilities, thereby also satisfying an alternative possibilities condition. The present paper argues that the most promising incompatibilist positions are versions of Wide Source Incompatibilism. §1—Laying the Foundation: Three Recent Claims Let ‘incompatibilism’ refer to the thesis that moral responsibility is incompatible with the truth of causal determinism. The following three claims about incompatibilism, while certainly not indisputable, are fairly prominent in the contemporary literature on moral responsibility. Call the first ‘the Taxonomy Claim’. Taxonomy Claim: There are two fundamentally different kinds of incompatibilism—Leeway Incompatibilism and Source Incompatibilism." @default.
