- W2488403150 abstract "This chapter discusses the perception of motion. Contrast, intensity, or color are relatively easy to define for perception, motion does not have such an unequivocal position. Motion is defined as the rate of change of distance with respect to time. This chapter presents current approaches as to the way motion is coded by the visual system in a way consistent with many anomalous results. It presents a comparison of the various networks proposed for motion perception mechanisms with the apparent geometries present in visual space–time. It also presents the perception of object motion in depth, apparent motion, and relative motion effects. The areas of motion perception are far richer in structures and observations than models for the retinal coding of motion. The following are three important properties of motion perception: (1) the visual system is capable of vector analyzing motions, (2) relative motions can be integrated into coherent shapes by the visual system, (3) there seems to be a hierarchy of preferred transformational invariants in the first two properties, particularly when motion in depth is a consequent perception." @default.
