Thus the chapter addresses the cultural aspects of child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, women's psychiatry, and marital and family therapy. In the treatment of an individual, it is necessary to define what is considered a healthy or functional persona as a standard to guide the course of therapy. Analogously, in family therapy, it is necessary to visualize a well-functioning, normal family as the final goal toward which treatment is directed. The concept of a functional or healthy family needs to be defined carefully and elaborated further in therapy for families of different cultural groups so that it is consistent with the relevant cultural background.
