- W2488449752 abstract "This chapter focuses on subgroups of the population served in psychiatric practice by age, that is, children, adolescents, or aged people—as opposed to ordinary adults; by gender, that is, women—as opposed to men); as well as the social units of a couple or family—as opposed to an individual. All of the subgroups are discussed from the standpoint of the cultural aspects of common psychological issues, related psychiatric disorders, and clinical suggestions for care. Thus the chapter addresses the cultural aspects of child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, women's psychiatry, and marital and family therapy. In the treatment of an individual, it is necessary to define what is considered a healthy or functional persona as a standard to guide the course of therapy. Analogously, in family therapy, it is necessary to visualize a well-functioning, normal family as the final goal toward which treatment is directed. The concept of a functional or healthy family needs to be defined carefully and elaborated further in therapy for families of different cultural groups so that it is consistent with the relevant cultural background. The chapter concludes that the purpose of family therapy can be described from a cultural perspective as working on the cultural system of the family in various ways, with the aim of promoting the function of the family." @default.
