- W2488453321 abstract "A brand-new field is that of evolutionary aesthetics, the attempt to explain art and beauty in terms of Darwinian principles. This quest runs into an immediate problem, in that the human valuation of art seems to contradict Darwinian principles, in that it represents an enormous investment of resources in an activity with no apparent practical value. As we show, the theories to explain this anomaly almost exactly parallel those offered to explain human ethics, and hence suffer from the same failings. We end by examining the Savanna Hypothesis that purports to explain our preference for the suburban lawn in terms of our evolutionary origin on the African savanna." @default.
