- W2488494090 abstract "Publisher SummaryThe life span of the circulating red cell was one of the fundamental questions confronting physiologists at the turn of this century. Initially, the debate centered on whether transfused cells were beneficial by virtue of their survival or merely served to stimulate erythropoiesis through the products of their destruction. Furthermore, it was observed that in a normal man the survival of transfused red cells were as long as one hundred days. The studies in normal women; however, were confounded by menstrual blood loss. So far, the only satisfactory direct methods of attacking the problem of the length of life of transfused corpuscles have been those involving the study of the changes of the erythrocyte count following transfusion. This would be indicated by the rise in the blood count that takes place a day or two after transfusion. The life of the transfused corpuscle is long; it has been found to extend for 30 days and more. The beneficial results of transfusion are without doubt not because of a stimulating effect on the bone marrow, but, it is reasonable to assume, to the functioning of the transfused blood corpuscles." @default.
