- W2488559325 abstract "The various experimental conditions used to generate aggressive behavior and the basic offensive and defensive strategies of rodents are described. The choice of the stimulus animal and the type of measure recorded are discussed. It is concluded that aggressive behavior is most easily generated if the conditions are chosen to mimic, as closely as possible, those facing the feral animal. The adjective aggressive is used to describe a wide range of behavior that reflects various underlying biological mechanisms. It is suggested that we should record a range of measures and not generalize too readily from one situation to another. The concept of dominance as an explanation of rodent social structure is evaluated; it is concluded that winning a social encounter does not simply predict a priority of access to scarce resources. Finally, ethical factors and the advantages and disadvantages of concentrating research effort on rodents are considered." @default.
