This approach consists of the following key aspects: use of interaction patterns to model design processes at various levels of abstraction in terms of simulation models, design decisions, and their interactions; use of a value-of-information based metric improvement potential; and stepwise refinement of interaction patterns instead of relying on completely coupled interactions. The unique aspect of this approach is the systematic consideration of design process decisions such as determining which couplings are important from a decision-making standpoint and the level of refinement necessary in the simulation models. The approach is presented using an energetic structural materials design example. Two of the main aspects discussed in this chapter include the complexity of simulation models and the complexity of design processes. Simulation models should be refined to the extent that they help designers in making good decisions efficiently. The “goodness” of decisions is dependent on the satisfaction of design requirements. A value-of-information-based metric is used for determining the appropriate level of refinement of simulation models, largely distinct from issues related to refinement associated with numerical convergence.
