- W2488793432 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the hemostatic mechanisms in tissue injury. The term hemostasis means the spontaneous arrest of bleeding by a physiological process based on the reactions of the blood and tissues to injury. Incised wounds of large arteries are likely to cause bleeding beyond the control of natural hemostasis, whereas wounds to similar arteries involving crushing or laceration of the tissues may bleed surprisingly little. Injuries to large veins may bleed profusely, but the pressure within the vessel may be so low that elevation of the injured part, a fall in general blood pressure, or an accumulation of blood in the tissues will stop the bleeding. Blood loss from the small vessels depends initially on the number injured and the rate at which blood is supplied to them—that is, on the degree of hyperemia or ischemia of the tissues involved. In damage to this type of vessel, the hemostatic mechanism is highly effective; the bleeding ceases spontaneously within a few minutes, and its normal operation is only appreciated when its failure is observed in cases of hemophilia or purpura, in which hemorrhage from even slight injuries is prolonged." @default.
