- W2488893630 abstract "Nationalist language epistemology that conceives of the relationship of culture, space and language in a one-dimensional way has a reasonably long and stable tradition in Western societies (Wimmer and Schiller 2002); thus it comes as no surprise that in Central Europe public discourses on language and the integration of migrants are deeply influenced by nationalist frameworks. However, in Germany and elsewhere, cultural phenomena have arisen that are difficult to capture within such national frameworks of thought. This is not only true for national literature canons, as Cooper (this volume) shows, there are also many types of music culture, most of which are popular in Germany, that form traditions that have never been especially associated with particular nation-states. Hip-hop, house music and Salsa belong to the better-known of these transnational music traditions. The notion of transnationalism not only tries to describe phenomena that cross national borders but refers to cultural practices that transcend territories and at the same time question epistemological frameworks that see the nation, its culture, its territory and its borders as a given point of departure for social research (see Pietrobruno 2006: chapter 1; also Hannerz 1996;Glick Schiller et al. 1997;Pries 2001;Pennycook 2007: chapter 3)." @default.
