- W2489001550 abstract "Political history has been conceived as a 'men only' affair. Until the First World War, women were denied political rights and hence it has been assumed they did not have any significant role in the political processes in party and parliament. In this article that view of the political past is contested by pointing to the ways in which women wielded power behind the scenes at the top of political parties. The analysis focuses on the influence which the daughter of the former Dutch prime-minister Abraham Kuyper exercised on the succession of her father as party-leader of the Dutch (protestant) Anti-Revolutionary Party (ARP). In 1919 women were granted the vote and women gained access to the most exclusive male club in the country. This new female electorate posed a problem to a party which had taken an anti-suffrage stance based on biblical grounds. Kuyper's own favourite crown-prince, the orthodox A.W.F. Idenburg, was strongly opposed to women's suffrage. Using both archival and printed sources it is argued that Henriette Kuyper used her informal position of power as daughter and caretaker of her old and sick father and as president of the anti-revolutionary women's clubs in order to support H. Colijn to become the new party leader. In exchange, he would put the right for ARP-women to be elected to parliament on the ballot of the ARP-congress and support her nomination as a candidate." @default.
