- W2489243910 abstract "It is March 1802. Dorothy and William Wordsworth spend the morning at Dove cottage reading a draft of William’s poem ‘The Butterfly’. In the afternoon a stranger knocks on the door asking for alms. The man is a ‘faint and pale’ sailor who is on his way to London to testify against his former captain, the master of a slave ship. The captain’s crimes are succinctly reported in Dorothy’s journal: ‘one Man had been killed a Boy to put to lodge with the pigs and was half eaten, one Boy set to watch in the hot sun until he dropped down dead’. The sailor is determined to expose the atrocities: ‘O he’s a Rascal, Sir, he ought to be put in the papers!’ The sailor also reveals that he ‘had been cast away in North America and had travelled 30 days among the Indians where he had been well treated’, and that he has persistently evaded press-ganging: ‘he would rather be in hell than be pressed’. The next day, Wordsworth composes another poem ‘The Emigrant Mother’.2" @default.
