- W2489246119 abstract "Extract Introduction The discovery of ion channels gated by extracellular ligands was made by Bernard Katz and José del Castillo while working with the motor endplate (del Castillo and Katz, 1955). Years later Katz and Miledi reported that the noisiness of the membrane potential increased when acetylcholine was applied and interpreted this noise as the result of opening and closing of individual channels (Katz and Miledi, 1972). Since then, several other channels activated by external ligands have been characterized (see other sections of this book). In some cases, detailed structural data is available making possible a comprehensive understanding of the structure-function relationship for these channels. In contrast, the discovery of plasma membrane channels gated by intracellular ligands has been less prolific. Classically, a ligand is regarded as an organic molecule capable of interacting with binding site(s) located in biologically active macromolecule(s). Thus, according to this definition, neurotransmitters are among the..." @default.
