- W2489385364 abstract "In this final chapter I examine two more novels and a film which take issues of identity and modernity and rework them. The works in question are U potpalublju (In the Hold, 1994) by Vladimir Arsenijevié, Ubistvo s predumisljajem (Premeditated Murder, 1993) by Slobodan Selenié, and the film Podzemlje (Underground, 1995) directed by Emir Kusturica. All three are narratives connected with the wars in former Yugoslavia during the early 1990s. To varying degrees they include the motifs of retreat into a private space and the fear of primitivism which are two of the basic elements within the complex of identities in the central Balkans. They are narratives which represent the extreme experience of war and the disintegration of a society and country. The mass destruction of the present is associated with other historical events which lead to evocations of cycles of destruction.
