• W2489585573 abstract "Objective. Osteoarthritis (OA) is associated with increased cardiovascular comorbidity and mortality. Evidence is lacking about whether arterial stiffness is involved in OA. The objective of our study was to find out associations between OA, arterial stiffness, and adipokines. Design. Seventy end-stage knee and hip OA patients (age<mml:math xmlns:mml=http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML id=M1><mml:mn fontstyle=italic>62</mml:mn><mml:mo>±</mml:mo><mml:mn fontstyle=italic>7</mml:mn></mml:math>years) and 70 asymptomatic controls (age<mml:math xmlns:mml=http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML id=M2><mml:mn fontstyle=italic>60</mml:mn><mml:mo>±</mml:mo><mml:mn fontstyle=italic>7</mml:mn></mml:math>years) were investigated using the applanation tonometry to determine their parameters of arterial stiffness. Serum adiponectin, leptin, and matrix metalloproteinase 3 (MMP-3) levels were determined using the ELISA method. Correlation between variables was determined using Spearman’s rho. Multiple regression analysis with a stepwise selection procedure was employed. Results. Radiographic OA grade was positively associated with increased carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV) (<mml:math xmlns:mml=http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML id=M3><mml:mi>r</mml:mi><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn fontstyle=italic>0.272</mml:mn></mml:math>,<mml:math xmlns:mml=http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML id=M4><mml:mi>p</mml:mi><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn fontstyle=italic>0.023</mml:mn></mml:math>). We found that OA grade was also associated with leptin and MMP-3 levels (<mml:math xmlns:mml=http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML id=M5><mml:mi mathvariant=normal>r</mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant=normal>h</mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant=normal>o</mml:mi><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mo>-</mml:mo><mml:mn fontstyle=italic>0.246</mml:mn></mml:math>,<mml:math xmlns:mml=http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML id=M6><mml:mi>p</mml:mi><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn fontstyle=italic>0.040</mml:mn></mml:math>and<mml:math xmlns:mml=http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML id=M7><mml:mi mathvariant=normal>r</mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant=normal>h</mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant=normal>o</mml:mi><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn fontstyle=italic>0.235</mml:mn></mml:math>,<mml:math xmlns:mml=http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML id=M8><mml:mi>p</mml:mi><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn fontstyle=italic>0.050</mml:mn></mml:math>, resp.).
